SEPULCHRES
Jackie Coyle Sepulchre Series 2026, reformed hand made paper sheets 60cm
You have stood here for approximately 360 million years resting on bedrock 490 million years old A timespan so vast and deep your rhythms of a different scale You have many tales to tell of warm ancient seas and long forgotten creatures Layers upon layers of sediments
formed and compacted with the cyclic deepening and shallowing of the seas as the world and climates shifted and settled And of 40000 years of modern human existence a fraction of a fraction of your life
STRATA

A place of extraction
enslavement
labour resource sustenance community home protection A sacred place a burial place A barrier between countries and others accommodating itself to the contours of your shape
FRAGILE TRACES
We found your calcareous bones a usable commodity
blasted away 30m of your eastern face We valued, took ownership, and protected your mineral veins We dug deeper into your core
The geological foundation for an ecosystem sustaining flora and fauna past and present
We are all geological To exist is an active thing
